About Me

My name is Guy Love (yes, really). I ran my first marathon as a senior in high school and my first ultramarathon as a freshman in college before establishing the first collegiate ultrarunning team in the nation at Virginia Tech (let's go Hokies). In the 11 years since, I've run 55 ultras around the country, from mountain 100 milers to road 50 miles to a timed track ultra. I've set the #6 all time for 12 hours for Ireland, I've placed in the back of the pack in plenty of race, I've won one race. That all sounds like a lot, but in reality running never came easy to me. In my first 5k I came in last place literally feet ahead of the ambulance sweeping the course. I knocked 15 minutes off my 5k time by the time I finished high school and over an hour off my marathon, mostly from trial and error and an awful lot of studying and experimentation to find what works for me. I continue to run a marathon every year or so, as well as shorter distance races locally here in Colorado when I can, while using running as a mode of exploration all around the world (my wife and I ‘ran’ Kilimanjaro for our honeymoon and the Tour du Mont Blanc in a few days with friends last year.)

I've absorbed every bit of information I could along the way, from runners, coaches, books, and blogs, to make myself the best prepared I could. Running did not come easy to me physically, but the puzzle of putting it all together has kept me coming back, the ability to tug at strings like nutrition, course knowledge, optimizing gear and training specificity to be the best I can on the starting line.

In my day job, I am a physical therapist assistant at a local senior living facility. I have found in my work there the importance of both meeting a client exactly where they are at while striking the perfect balance of stress and progression to help them achieve their goals, whether that is simply climbing four stairs to enter their child's home or returning to walking the Bolder Boulder in their eighties. The margin of error is quite low with that group of people, so my eye for detail in training development has grown accordingly.

I hold a strong knowledge of running training and strength training for running, as well as race planning, including nutrition, gear, and shoe choice to be the best you can on the starting line of your next adventure.
